My father is Robert C. Baker. "Bob","Bake".
He was a staff sargeant and served in the 821st TDB from July 14, 1942 - Dec. 17, 1945. Does anyone remember him. I'm interested in coming to one of your reunions also. thanks.

I was searching for information on Elmer Rossback, my grandfather. While he did serve in the war, he spent most of his time in India and the Philipines. I find it strange that there are multiple Elmer Rossbacks who served in WWII. Regardless, if anyone knew my grandfather (He lived in KC, MO and then in Arkansas) please contact me.

Hey Rod (and Ciro) - You have REALLY expanded this website. I saw the message by Melissa Brodsky, and had to respond. Milton Was a buddy of mine. I am going to the 60th anniv. of D-Day with the 29th Division group. in June. I guess I am the only TD who is coming. I don't think Donald McEvoy will? You and Ciro should have got in on it! This is probably the last time the 29th will sponsor a trip. Everybody is too old or laid-up to go anymore. I am going with two sons, two grandsons, a grand daughter, and a daughter-in-law. Seven of us! Last time for me! Hope you had a good re-union this year. I will come to the next one. Best regards - Jim

To Melissa Brodsky - I knew Milton Brodsky very well. We were both in Company B, 821st TD BATTALION from January 1943 in Basic Training in Texas, thru Tennessee Manuevers and Advanced Training in Kentucky in 1943-44. We went to England on the same troopship (USS Sea Porpoise) early in 1944, and stayed at Camp Grittleton in Wiltshire until crossing to Normandy on an LST onto Omaha Beach on June 26,1944. (20 days after D-Day). We served together thru the Normandy and Brittany fighting, and on to Belgium and Holland, and into Germany in late 1944. I was there in the town of Bourheim where Milton was fatally wounded in November. That was a fierce battle. We lost most of B Company and some of C Company there. I was one of the few who escaped being captured, wounded or killed. We had to be re-organized afterwards. My platoon leader (1st Lt.) and platoon sargeant were both captured, but survived the war. The 821st went on with the 29th Division across Germany until we met up with th Russians on the Elbe river, and Germany surrendered in May 1945. I visited Milton's grave in Margratten Cemetary, in October 2002, on a 29th Division tour. but first I went back to Bourheim again, to re-visit that terrible place! All its war damage has been restored and it's just another sleepy little German town, now. That gave me closure on the incident. I hope that this story is meaningful to you. I will be in Normandy in June 2004, for the 60th anniversary of D-Day. No others from the 821st are coming. I would love to see your pictures of your grandfather and "Duke" (maybe I knew him?). Also Elmer Rossback, whom I did know, but have lost track of him. I will be staying at the Hotel Saint Pierre in Vire (near Saint Lo) from June 2 thru June 9, 2004. Try to contact me, please.I am going to all of the ceremonies and events of that time

Hi ! My father has just purchased an old Dodge Ambulance from WWII which he is currently restauring. We have tried to take of newer paint to get down to the original markings. And on the right side over the front tire, there is a square with the number 821 in it. Could this mean that is was a part of this battalion ? We would really like to find the history of the car. Please contact me if you have any information. I also have pictures of the car with markings.

Hello- My father and I are thrilled to have found this site. My grandfather, Milton Brodsky was part of the group. My dad and I will be attending memorial day services in Margarten this year (2004). We are wondering if anyone else may be there as well? We would be happy to visit any graves for people who can't make the trip. I will also be in Normandy.

We have lots of pictures, mostly without names. Would be happy to share. We have one picture of my grandfather and someone named Duke (this is the only shot of anyone with a name) I am wondering if anyone knows who "Duke" might be. We Also have one picture of my grandfather and Elmer Rossback. Any information about Duke or information about my grandfather would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for information on Elmer W. Rossback, he was KIA on April 24, 1945 in Germany, his tank drove over a landmine. He was buried in Margraten, but it 1949 brought back to the U.S. and is buried at Fort Rosecrans in San Deigo CA. Looking for anyone who could tell me more about what happened on April 24, 1945.

Thank you so much for this web site. I have been trying to gather as much information as possible about my Dad. His name was Walter Britt Johnson and he served with the 821st TD Bn. My mother tells me that my Dad's nickname during the war was Fearless Fosdick. He acquired the nickname because he would swim the river during the night to get supplies across. We have a newspaper article about my Dad, telling about his rescue of a burning ammunition tank and driving it to safety. He sustained burns on his face and hands because of this. I would like to hear from anyone who was with the 821st or family members of 821st soldiers. I would like to know what they were like when they returned home. The book "Beyond the BeachHead" has good information about the 29th Infantry Division, which I have learned the 821st TD BN served with for much of the war. My Dad died in 1997 and I would like to put a book together for my mother. Thank you for your help! A proud daughter of a WWII soldier.
